Audiology Australia's response to the Report from the Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery Clinical Committee of the Medical BEnefits Schedule (MBS) Review Taskforce.
Key points in the submission to the Clinical Committee include that AudA:
(1) strongly supports the recommendation to remove the Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist and neurologist referral requirement from a range of audiology services which we believe will greatly enhance the ability for patients to obtain timely and more affordable access to audiology services
(2) supports the Clinical Committee’s recommendation to introduce paediatric loading for a selection of audiology services, increasing patient access to the oto-acoustic emission audiometry test for those outside the infant population and the inclusion of all implantable hearing devices as being applicable to receiving Medicare benefits.
(3) recommends that the Clinical Committee further integrate the MBS system to allow patients to seek the services of an audiologist without requirement for a medical referral and to enable audiologists to refer patients directly to specialists such as ENTs when necessary. This would - in AudA’s view – further improve patient access to audiology services by reducing the restrictions currently in place that delay the opportunity for a patient to receive the earliest treatment possible.
