Submission to the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety
Audiology Australia has made a submission to the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, setting out some of the current challenges in this area and makes recommendations to the Royal Commission as to how to address them.
Key recommendations made in the submission include:
(1) Introducing a hearing screening program as part of an aged care assessment process for all aged care residents for the early detection and management of hearing loss and to help ensure that aged care service providers are meeting the Aged Care Quality Standards.
(2) Auditing aged care organisations to ascertain that they are facilitating appropriate referrals to hearing health care providers as required in order to meet a consumer’s needs, goals, preferences and improve their health and wellbeing.
(3) Reviewing the Department of Health Hearing Services Program model of service delivery and funding arrangements for hearing health care services in residential aged care to better address and accommodate the hearing health care needs of older Australians and clients with dementia and/or cognitive decline.
