Audiology Australia is pleased to advise our NSW members that following advocacy from AudA and other hearing sector stakeholders, the Workers Compensation Independent Review Office (WIRO) has reversed its policy towards the funding of hearing aid claims.
Previously, WIRO had advised that it would no longer provide funding for the purpose of investigating or pursuing a workers’ compensation claim for hearing aids on or after 1 January 2019 where the worker was eligible for subsidised hearing services under the Department of Health’s Hearing Services Program (HSP).
AudA had concerns about the implications of this policy change and that it potentially restricted those least able to afford costs associated with making a WorkCover claim from being able to recover the cost of a medico-legal report or legal advice associated with the claims process. It also meant that these Australians would have difficulty in pursuing their claims despite being potentially eligible for workers’ compensation entitlements
However, after a recent State Insurance Regulatory Authority review of the NSW workers’ compensation system, WIRO has now reversed its decision. This means that – as of 1 July 2020 – WIRO will provide funding to pursue a claim for hearing aids for eligible injured workers regardless of whether the claim is accompanied by a claim for lump sum compensation.
