A myriad of experiences over time can either act as risk factors or protective factors with respect to cognitive functioning as we age. This talk offers an update on the ways that stress, chronic illness, social networks and lifestyle factors can influence attention, memory and executive functioning in later life. Trajectories of healthy ageing and clinical syndromes associated with declines in cognitive functioning are discussed, with implications for everyday functioning highlighted.
