For National Close the Gap Day on 21 March 2024, Audiology Australia joins schools, businesses, community groups and Australians from every corner of our country in showing our support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health equity.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples continue to have significantly higher rates of hearing loss and ear disease than non-Indigenous Australians, with as many as 90% of children in remote areas reported to have Otitis Media at any one time.

Audiology Australia is calling on Australian governments to commit long-term funding and support to address hearing health service inequity including:

•    Policy Change: Supporting the development of a national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander framework for hearing health.
•    Workforce and Services: Expanding the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander hearing health workforce and Medicare-billed audiological services
•    Prevention of Otitis Media: Developing and implementing effective national plan for prevention of otitis media.
•    Education Support: Professional development to equip teachers to understand and manage hearing loss within classrooms.
•    Support in the Justice System: Ensuring all currently incarcerated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples undergo hearing assessment and be supported with treatment and/or hearing rehabilitation as needed.
