There is a growing body of research which identifies age-related hearing loss as a potential modifiable risk factor for cognitive decline and dementia, and hearing aid use as a potential protective factor for these conditions. However, further research on the potential protective effect of hearing aid use and cognitive decline and dementia is required.

This position statement outlines outlines the provided evidence and advises against audiologists using or be seen using the potential association of untreated hearing loss to cognitive decline and dementia to encourage the sale and fitting of hearing aids or other amplification devices.
